New from CHA

Scrapbooking was a huge part of the CHA show, so I had a lot of booths to peruse. I feel lucky to be a specialty store. I don't know how regular stores choose among all the possibilities. I just have to ferret out what few things are available for my store and I do search long and hard.

Miuoo912 Our new arrivals from the show include two new album types: Camo albums from Collected Memories in green and desert camo as well as the Life Jacket Albums from Memories in Uniform. They have cloth covers that unsnap so you can embroider on them, sew on patches and attach insignia. MIU also has new hero journal sets and modern and heritage emblem sets.

From Sugartree we have new World War II papers and a Gettysburg address paper that I really like.Sug00917_2

A New Start in a New Year

For me, this new year is the start of my new life, free of cancer. I started it off by making plans to retire in a year from my day job and devote my time to this business, my true love. I have many plans to enhance the business and make more items available for those members of specialty groups within the military and law enforcement.

In the meantime, I keep close watch on the industry for any, and all, items that meet our customers' needs. I'm off to the CHA (Craft and Hobby Association) trade show in Anaheim on February 11th. We already have a few of the newly released items from Paper House Productions in-house, two police papers, police stickers, military epoxy stickers and military chipboard. I'm sure I'll find many more items at the show. More later after the show.

A Salute to Our Veterans

This Veterans' Day is a salute to our heroes, past and present, who have served and are serving their country. And I am also reminded of those who wait, for they also serve. We created our own Soldier's Cross Laser Cut in large and small sizes as a tribute. And Karen Foster has a new paper and cardstock sticker to remember those who have passed.

New Military Series

Both Karen Foster and Creative Imaginations have come out with new military series. Karen Foster has four new papers with matching titles and a new military sticker. Creative Imaginations has an extensive group of papers and stickers.

Summer Musings

It's been a slow summer in many ways. I have finally finished up my chemotherapy, which is a good thing, believe me. It does slow you down. As to new product, not much showed up at the CHA Summer show from what I can tell. I picked up a few new things from SRM Press in the way of sticker sheets for retirement and remembrance, and there are some new military insignia stamps from Inkadinkado. The big news from Creative Imaginations is a whole new military line that will be coming out in October for Memory Trends. Exciting news. I know they have a firefighter and police line in the planning also, but that will probably be out sometime next year. Our discounted line for September will be K and Company, and I have some new albums coming in soon for the service academies. Griff's Shortcuts has two new laser cuts I've been looking for, the soldier cross and a title cut, State Trooper. I'm expecting those any day along with several new civil war image die cuts and a motorcycle cop title.

Marine Corps Family Conference

The 4th Annual National Marine Corps Family Conference, “United in Spirit”, will be held July 26-29, 2007, in Anaheim, California. “United in Spirit” truly represents the Marine Corps family. The weekend offers many activities: a variety of workshops, entertainment, exhibits and vendors, military displays, speakers, authors and much more. The weekend is conference is open to spouses, parents, children and all interested. Online registration is available at: www.marineparentsunited.com.

A Time to Remember

Memorial Day weekend is always one of the two occasions, Veterans' Day being the other, that prompts a visit to our local national cemetery, Tahoma National Cemetery. It is called the Arlington of the West because of its incredible beauty. The main plaza overlooks Mt. Rainier. My father is interred there and it is located right next to the high school that my oldest son attended. The local junior high school children place small American flags at each grave site on these occasions and the effect brings tears to your eyes. So many American heroes.

News and Specials

May brings warmer weather, some new items and our monthly special. This month we feature 20% off all of Memories in Uniform products. They have terrific laser cuts, some great paper and kits and a new book. One of their new items is a desert pixel camouflage paper and a Current Ops paper from their Current Ops Kit. From Karen Foster we have a new Superhero Rub-on and some Retirement Metal Signs. And the military paper pads from K & Company have arrived.

Honor them, support them, show them you care.

These are the words used by the USO, one of the organizations we have chosen to donate a percentage of our gross sales to. The USO does much more than the image most people have in their minds. They provide pre-paid phone cards so overseas troops can call home. They set up USO Canteens with internet access to surf the web or email family and friends and they even have mobile canteens using special ATVs.  Their Operation Enduring Care supplies clothing and toiletries to injured soldiers and sponsors USO Day Rooms in military hospitals. They hand out hard-to-get personal items, toiletries, snacks, books and cds with their Operation Care Package. And, of course, there are the USO Entertainment Tours so great for morale.

USO Community Centers on overseas bases offer libraries, reading rooms and get-togethers for GIs and their families to help them cope with the difficulties of moving to, and living in, a strange land. When a GI is wounded they arrange for childcare services to make it easier for their spouse to travel overseas to be with them. The USO brings famous people overseas to visit with children of military families in D.O.D. schools. It’s a great organization.

Another of our charities is Disabled American Veterans. Through their National Service Program and its 86 offices in the United States and Puerto Rico. They help disabled veterans cut through the bureaucracy and red tape of government benefit claims. Last year their they helped nearly a quarter of a million veterans and family members to $3 billion in new and retroactive benefits. Their Employment Program ensures disabled veterans get a fair and well-earned break in the job market and their Transportation Network Program strives to make sure no disabled veteran is deprived of medical care because he or she can’t find transportation to a VA medical facility. They also provide disaster relief and have a public awareness outreach program.

Service Memories has chosen these two charities to represent the military side of our customers. We use the Better Business Bureau’s Charity Watch site www.give.org to check out the charities under consideration. There is a national fallen firefighter’s organization we hope to include as soon as it make’s the BBB’s list. And we are on the lookout for a law enforcement one the fits our profile also. Although we are not in the “black” yet, we feel it’s important to “give back” to those who support us.
